The problem with wrestling merch (and why I built a fix)
I hate bad wrestling shirts.
You know the ones I'm talking about. The ones that want you to drop a lot of money just because it carries a big name, or a big brand, and the artwork still feels generic, basic, or god forbid, horrible. Like the name alone was supposed to justify spending your hard-earned cash. Like nobody in the room actually watched a match before they sent it to print.
The rule I design by
If I can't explain the why behind a design, it's not finished. That's not a slogan I picked for marketing. It's how I actually work, on a Nike project or on a piece of wrestling gear, doesn't matter. Every line has to earn its spot. If a detail is only there because it looks cool, it gets cut.
Most wrestling merch skips that step entirely. The logo becomes the whole pitch. Nobody stops to ask what the shirt is actually trying to say.
Where the idea actually came from
A while back, while visiting the Design Museum of London, I went down a rabbit hole of old patent drawings. Technical. Precise. Every line was there because it had to be there, not because it looked cool. Art pieces made to look like modern inventions.
Specifically, i was in the Wes Anderson Exhibition, and there it was, the blueprints of his puppets for Isle of Dogs, i fell in love on the “how” of that project. (that and alongside of book of patents, that just made me spent like an hour, being asked multiple times if i was going to buy the book)
That's the part most people miss about patent illustrations: they weren't made to be pretty. They were made to explain how something works, down to the last detail, hatch shading to show depth, callouts to show function, cross-sections to show what's underneath. There's no room for decoration that isn't doing a job.
Patents, technical drawings, they show us the craftsmanship behind every work, every idea. I figured wrestling deserved that same treatment. Not a cartoon. Not a logo. An actual blueprint of the thing.
Putting it to the test
So I picked three things that define this world for me: the mask, the ring, the bell.
The lucha libre Mask
The mask is the one people recognize instantly, the identity a wrestler puts on before they become someone else. I drew it the way an engineer would draw a piece of equipment: front view, side profile, back paneling, the lacing detail most fans never actually look at up close.
Anyone can wear a mask. Very few understand what it means. Inspired by vintage patent blueprints, this t-shirt pays tribute to the wrestlers who turned a simple mask into a symbol of honor, mystery, and legacy.

THE WRESTLING RING
The ring is the stage. Four turnbuckles, the ropes, the canvas, all the parts nobody thinks about until something goes wrong mid-match. Drawn as a technical diagram, it stops looking like a set piece and starts looking like what it is: precision engineering built to take a beating (and for us to be beaten in)

The ringside bell
The bell is the smallest object with the biggest job. One sound that starts and ends everything. I treated it with the same patent-style respect as the other two, exploded view, mounting hardware, the works, because a detail this small still deserved the full technical treatment

What i learned from creating this collection of shirts
What stayed with me from this whole process wasn't the drawing itself. It was the research. Going piece by piece through something we treat as simple, a mask, a ring, a bell, and realizing how much is actually there once you stop and look. The stitching nobody notices. The turnbuckle nobody thinks about until it fails. The single sound that somehow carries an entire show.
That's what I wanted this series to be about. Not merch with a wrestling theme slapped on it. An excuse to take this world apart piece by piece and show people what's actually inside it, because I love it, and because it earns that kind of attention.
